This is really an outstanding ‘phone in all respects. It’s great that you can exchange address books between ‘phones – shame there isn’t a shared central address list as there is in Bang and Olufsen’s system – but then that costs over three times the price. I have both B&O and this now. If I was forced to pick one, it would be the Siemens. The B&O might look better, and have a couple of advantages, but the Siemens looks great and is probably all round a better phone. I now have 4 of these, and will probably add another couple. The intercom function, which I didn’t anticipate using is very good – mainly because it is quick and simple, which is important when it is easy to just should up the stairs. It’s great with guests when you can call their room from the kitchen to see if they want coffee in the morning.
The sound quality is outstanding. I have a bad line and these are the only ‘phones that have given me good quality reception – again, beating B&O.
Overall, one of the rare products/gadgets that after buying one feels better for it. Buy them – they will improve your quality of life, and that’s not bad for a ‘phone.

Obviously liked the phone – otherwise wouldn’t have bought an additional handset! The sound is clear, the range fantastic. Battery life is huge. Charged the phone and left it off the charger (they recommend letting it fully discharge once to calibrate the battery display) – 2 weeks later still not close to needing a charge.
Unlike another reviewer my additional handset came with a manual in the box.
Minor gripe – setting up the siemens software (mac version) from their website to transfer the address book via bluetooth is temperamental. It works but can get confused, require multiple attempts and crash (if you want to rename the phone – do it before the initial sync is my advice as that really confused it). Maybe the windows version is better.

Although it has its faults (including its price), this phone is still a lovely piece of hardware (apart from the loudspeaker); the software (firmware) does leave a bit to be desired, but it is slowly improving. I won’t repeat the original issues with the phone as if like me you already have one you know them (and they are already covered in reviews of the main unit with base station Siemens Gigaset SL785 DECT Cordless Phone with Answer Machine – Silver/Black). I needed another handset for upstairs so bought this additional one.
Setting-up the additional handset is a straightforward process. The full setup details are in the manual on the gigaset website, but the only bits you need are:
- Under `Settings’ select `Registration’, `Register Handset’, the base you’ve got (e.g. `Base 1′), then you have to remember the Pin you set-up. Once it comes up with `Searching for a base which is in registration mode’ you need to press (and hold for 3 seconds) the button on the front of the base station.
- The next bit to do is copy the address book from one handset to the other. Select the directory on the original handset and then `Options’, scroll down to `Copy All’, then select `to Internal’. Select the new handset you want to transfer them to (probably INT 2, unless you’ve got more than one already). Be warned, if you have a lot of entries it is a slow process (even if you’ve only updated one entry).
- One thing I didn’t find easily in the manual was how to rename the handsets, from the default `INT 1′ and `INT 2′. It’s actually quite simple; on the control key press the left `INT’ key, then select `Rename’ and type in your new handset name.
I do like the way the additional handset integrates with the original: check your messages or missed calls on one and it clears the alerts from the other; delete your call history from one and it deletes from the other.
The additional handset comes with a attachment clip, a battery and a charger (nothing else, not even a manual); so you with have to go online or follow the guidance above.
Overall this remains a decent home phone (good sound quality and reception range), but it is expensive and don’t expect the kind of functionality you’ve got on your mobile.

We were so impressed by the sheer quality of the SL785, its lovely looks, ease of use and crisp clear sound that we decided to invest in an additional handset too. My only regret is that we didn’t decide this at time of original purchase because the two-phone set was somewhat cheaper. The cost of the stand-alone handset is eye-wateringly offputting…..but, hey, you get what you pay for and the SL78 range does certainly give you lot. Very impressive phone & glad we took the plunge!
